New Years in November was a really fun night. The night started at the Virginia Avenue house, where a pregame was held for a boy's birthday. We then moved to Boylan around 10:30-11, where the bar was already very crowded. The problem with bars is that if you get separated from the general group that you came with, you can sometimes end up doing a little dance for half an hour looking upstairs, downstairs, down the hall, in the bathroom... the pattern is repetitive and exhausting, and not at all fun when you're sober. I ended up going home around 1:30 (seems to be my go-to hour), but many others ended up late night-ing afterward.
Friday the weather was beautiful, and Elmo's satellite house decided to celebrate with a day of 40s and Boxing. Don't read too much into it--it's exactly what it sounds like. Drink 40oz bottles of Malt Liquor and a bracket of boys were matched up and boxed. Heavy rap and hip hop blasted from inside the house as the audience sat on the porch railing or stood around the perimeter of the fighting ring. There were proper boxing gloves and headgear and mouth guards, with a 2nd year boy in an actual referee outfit. The fights were accurately matched, and none were too brutal...in the big scheme of things. That's not to say there weren't a few bloody mouths and black eyes. The funniest part was the fact that passerby's on the street were not only intrigued but also entertained by the event. A couple of old men in Barbour jackets stood and watched from the street, cheering on their favorites. (Which reminds me, there was a girl taking bets at the start of every fight, distributing the winnings accordingly after each round.) It was a very unconventional way to enjoy an afternoon of good weather, but I suppose it's something I'll always remember.
As for Saturday, we actually won our football game against Florida State, with a touchdown in the last 6 seconds to win by one point. It got people excited that the game was worth seeing, and so not a whole lot went on during the day. After sleeping for 12 much-needed hours, I went with Bailey to 2U for a day party with a band, but because so many people went to the game it became more of a small gathering with live music. We watched the game on TV and it soon ended up just about 15 of us, and we ordered Thai food to pick up. Everyone was extremely happy to hear that I was "totally good to drive." I nursed a Bodo's Bagels cup with half lemonade half iced tea, but who's to say whether or not it was spiked.
Last night was a 21st birthday party for a boy in Elmo, and his parents and both sets of grandparents graciously put up with the loud boisterous college kids around them. It was a fun event, because Coupe's (the bar where it was held) has a spacious outdoor area; the weather was beautiful and a band played oldies so there was lots of dancing. I've said it once and I'll say it again, dancing it the best when it comes to not drinking, because you're distracted enough not to be staring at your empty hand or the tipsy people around you who seem to be having way more fun than you. I made it fairly late this night, when bars closed I made it to a late night! Luckily it was at the hall, which is two houses down from Theta, so it wasn't a huge commitment on my part. It was fun, but I could have gone to bed at my 1:30 hour and been just as satisfied with my nights.
