I am, ironically enough, in a drinking society. It's called Thursdays and it is a combination of girls from Kappa, Theta, Tri Delt, and Pi Phi. It's technically supposed to be on the down low, but who really reads this except for my parents? Tonight is the first Thursday event of the year (yes, the fact that it is on a Thursday is intentional). We will go to DKE for a pregame with Tilka, one of the two male drinking societies. The funny part is, aside from becoming initiated, there isn't a whole lot of drinking involved... I guess it's more like a collection of girls who enjoy going out and having a good time, regardless of what else is going on.
Tonight was Bailey's first night working as a waitress at Trinity's Irish Pub, a bar and restaurant on the corner in the heart of Charlottesville. So about five of us went there for dinner to rattle off the most complicated orders we could think of:
"Can I please have spinach and artichoke dip without the spinach?"
"I'd love a grilled cheese with Brie please."
"May I have half a Caesar wrap and half a buffalo chicken wrap?"
"I'll have a white Russian with organic almond milk. Thanks."
Turns out Bailey was shadowing another waitress so our carefully thought out orders were useless, but we had a nice evening nonetheless. Dinner is always the easiest to turn down a drink since you can focus on your food and the people around you stopping to say hi (Dad and Betsy will remember how many people end up passing your outdoor table since it's in between apartments/frats and class/libraries.
After dinner we ventured back to Theta to shower and change before the Thursdays/Tilka event. I decided on a loose sweater, black skirt, and my brand new HEELYS. For all the haters and/or ignorant newbies out there, Heelys are the sneakers with the wheels in them so you can casually zip from point A to B. Everyone in the house gets a kick out of them--especially our cook, Mike Jones--and I thought only fitting that I show them off tonight.
I have to say, this whole not drinking at all thing is starting to get annoying. I'm not saying that I miss getting drunk, but I certainly have gotten an insight into the pace of drinking by watching my friends from the outside. I see now that taking three shots in fifteen minutes might not be the smartest way to handle one's night, but I wouldn't mind pouring one shot into a class of cranberry juice and sipping it while I put on my makeup. As frustrated as I am, a tiny part of me is relieved that I am annoyed, because for a while I was thinking, "Hey, this isn't so bad... a semester of this? No problamo." And now I'm thinking more along the lines of, "Well, shit."
However, the one good thing about a sober night tonight is that tomorrow is the Commerce Career Day, open to Commerce students and College students registered to the CavLink program (the Career Services website that helps you get jobs). So tomorrow morning I will wake up early, edit my resume which I had critiqued earlier today, research ten of the companies I could see myself at, and head over in my dress and blazer. I'M SO NERVOUS! I'm worried all of the Comm students got advice on what to wear and how to handle themselves, but luckily I talked to Megan tonight who told me she is just as lost as I am.
In terms of drinking, there isn't much more information I can give. This past week has been uneventful, and I have been in either the library or Comm School every single night this week working... and man has it paid off. I was chatting up a storm in every class because I not only read but understood the material. I even went to office hours with my Comm Law professor and talked to her about the 5th year masters program--she said she'd help me every step of the way, and even write me a letter of recommendation! At a school as big as UVA, I am extremely proud that I've made a bond with such a lovely teacher.
As much as I'd like to keep filling you all in, that's all I can think of for now. See you Sunday, when I can hopefully share more stories of the absurd weekends that occur at this school.
